A three (3) month minimum commitment is required.

New Graduate Classes Yoga Sanctuary provides new graduates an opportunity to teach on our public schedule! New graduate classes program offers a one-two month opportunity (4-8 week session) for graduates to build their teaching experience within an established studio setting. These classes are offered at each location of Yoga Sanctuary.

Volunteer Positions As a committed member of the community, Yoga Sanctuary is requested to participate in various single community events, often many teachers are requested. We endeavour to call upon our new graduates to participate, this adds yet another opportunity for grads to build their experience! Graduates of Yoga Sanctuary Yoga Teacher Training are in great demand for their in-depth knowledge, clear instruction, ability to teach to all levels, and ability to guide students to the experience of self-awareness that is the true essence of yoga. Yoga Sanctuary teachers range in age from their 20s to their 70s and can be found teaching in community yoga studios around the globe; in urban and rural areas; in schools, prisons, and hospitals; and at workplaces from the United Nations in Africa, a retreat centre in Nicaragua and yoga studios in Japan and Korea, because Yoga Sanctuary supports individual inquiry and expression and helps teachers the places you find our teachers are as varied as the teachers themselves.

“If there was a ninth limb in Patanjali’s Yoga, it would have to be Yoga Sanctuary’s AYTT program.”

Do you offer teacher training information sessions?

We regularly hold teacher training information sessions at all our studios. This is a great opportunity to meet some of our faculty, find out more about teacher training and ask any questions that you may have.

Who is yoga teacher training for?

Yoga Teacher Training is for everyone! It is a great choice for people who want to deepen their practice and learn to guide. Whether you have been to only a few classes and feel drawn to teach, or have a seasoned practice this course will set the foundation for your physical practice, deepen your awareness of philosophy, anatomy and yoga as therapy.

How proficient in yoga do you have to be to participate in the training program?

At Yoga Sanctuary we believe yoga is for everybody. We accept students regardless of their ability, age or experience. We feel a wide range of students is beneficial in each course, as this will be most representative of what you will experience while teaching public classes. Our eldest graduate is 72 and our youngest graduate is 17 years old. Almost all our public classes will have students with different skill levels, body types and personalities much like the diverse lineages of yoga. A few of our recent graduates had only experienced as few as 4 classes before enrolling, while others have had a personal practice for more than a year or two. It is for anyone who has a desire that comes from the heart. Each weekend will include a large amount of time devoted to both the study and practice of asanas (postures) as well as practice teaching your fellow students. We recommend that you start to attend classes as soon as you can, if you don’t already have a consistent practice. You will be required to fulfill a certain amount of practical hours for each course.

Do I need to be interested in teaching?

We have many students who enroll in a teacher-training program solely for their own personal development. The skills you will be learning during any program will enable you to gain greater fulfillment from your own yoga practice and your life. Should anyone taking the program for the purpose of deepening his or her practice decide to teach, our 250-hour program will qualify you to be an inspiring, safe and effective teacher.

How long is each program? What are the schedules like?

Both of Yoga Sanctuary 250 Hour programs cover the same comprehensive curriculum. We offer part time program, from September – April each year, as well as a full time intensive course over three months, April-June. Each training is held at our 95 Danforth Ave location. You will learn about asana poses involved in the Ashtanga Primary Series, Hatha and Vinyasa styles of yoga, meditation, pranayama, anatomy, history, philosophy and yoga therapy. The main factors to consider are: where you would like to undertake the training, whether you learn better in an intensive format, or prefer a more gradual approach to accumulating knowledge and skills; and, of course, which format works best for your lifestyle and free time. The 250 Hour Part-Time 8 Month Training offered at our Danforth location, is designed to work with your busy schedules in mind. Dive deeply into the study and practice of yoga while still being able to maintain your commitments to your work, family, schooling and other activities. We meet for 16 weekends, over an 8 month period every other weekend, offering 10 hours of faculty instruction per weekend For the schedule of our next training Part Time Training at 95 Danforth Ave in Toronto click here. The 250 Hour Full Time Fast Track Teacher Training gives you the chance to immerse yourself in an excellent intensive (full time) training. The course runs for 12 consecutive weekends, offering 14 hours per weekend of faculty instruction and is perfect for students who learn best while studying intensively between scheduled course sessions. The course requires a class practice approximately 4-5 days a week depending on your scheduling of required classes. What style of Yoga or lineage does the 250 Hour Program follow?

The 250-hour program is primarily an Ashtanga Vinyasa based course. We also explore the styles of Hatha, and Vinyasa Power Flow. At Yoga Sanctuary we recognize that the main styles of yoga practiced at the studio are from the lineage of T. Krishnamacharya, but we don’t follow this single lineage, style or approach, as we do offer ongoing public classes in Zen Stretch, Pilates and Qigong. We pride ourselves on having a diverse teaching staff with different backgrounds so that you can gain a well-rounded view of all styles. Through the training and your teaching practice, we want you to find your own voice and a teaching method that is authentic to you.

Who is on the faculty teaching staff?

All Yoga Sanctuary Training Institute faculty are Yoga Alliance Certified at the 250-hour, 500-hour level, or E500 level. All of our faculty are committed to continuing their own studies, to share with you their latest inspirations from their practice to your classroom. All members of our faculty participate in workshops and courses from various traditions of yoga and are committed to your higher learning. Assistant teachers may be a part of your trainings and they too are from our current roster of teachers at Yoga Sanctuary and hold a Yoga Alliance 200, 300 and 500 level certification. For more information on our teacher-training faculty, please visit our Faculty and Assistant Faculty page. To meet some of our faculty members, attend an Information Session.

How much time should I expect to spend on homework?

250 Hour Part Time Training – Expect a minimum 5 or more hours of home study plus an additional 1-2 classes per week during the scheduled training times, in addition to the faculty led weekend hours at Yoga Sanctuary. 250 Hour Full Time Fast Track Training – Expect a minimum 10 hours or more of home study plus an additional 3-4 classes per week during the scheduled training times, in addition to the faculty led weekend hours at our Danforth location. 300 Hour Advanced Yoga Teacher Training – Home study times vary from one to ten hours of home study per module, depending on the particular AYTT course taken.

Is there a limit to the number of students accepted to Yoga Sanctuary teacher training programs?

Our Danforth location hosts the vast majority of our yoga teacher training programs. The group size is limited to 40, with one Assistant faculty member to keep our student teacher ratio low. Yoga Sanctuary is committed to your process in becoming the best teacher possible and faculty feedback is an important part of this learning process. Larger group sizes allow for practice teaching opportunities that better mimic true teaching situations because of the diversity of students in our groups. The number of faculty and assistants is adjusted to allow optimal individual attention whether you are in a small or larger group. Due to the limited class size, we encourage you to sign up well in advance in order to secure your place in the training.

How do I register for a Program?

To register for a teacher training we require a completed application form and a registration fee. You may fill out an application form for the program you’re interested in online, scroll to the bottom of the training page you select and click on the ‘register now’ option. For teenage applicants, please expect an interview to be conducted with your parent(s) and a Faculty member to ensure you are fully aware of the scheduled times and commitment. You can reserve your place by paying the non-refundable registration fee of $500. To pay your registration fee, please stop by any of our locations, contact us by phone or pay online. If you already have a user id and password with us, you can pay immediately online by logging into your account.

When will I find out if I have been accepted into the program?

After you submit your completed Teacher Training Application and registration fee, you will be contacted via email within one week to confirm that you have been accepted onto the course.

What if I miss a class?

100% attendance is required for all of Yoga Sanctuary training programs. On occasion we may be able to make a special arrangement for a missed class for the 250-hour training. Please ensure that any such requests arising from scheduling conflicts are communicated to Yoga Sanctuary prior to the training, so that we can discuss whether a special arrangement will be possible. There will usually be an additional charge for such arrangement (for example, private sessions are charged at $100/hour and the cost may be shared by others if they missed the same class). There are also other faculty-approved courses or workshops that can be taken to make up missed class time. These courses or workshops are purchased at the YTT student discount.
